Auckland SEO that still pays the bills, built for the AI era

I'm Marcos Azaro, an Auckland SEO specialist, and I've run search campaigns since 2006. I help Auckland businesses win the searches that bring in work: the Google map pack, the organic results under it, and the AI assistants people now ask for recommendations. Keyword research, technical SEO, content, link building and your Google Business Profile, planned and done by me.

What an SEO company in Auckland does for you

An SEO company gets your business into the Google results Auckland customers see when they search for what you sell. In practice that means researching how people search, fixing what stops Google crawling and trusting your site, writing pages that answer those searches, earning links from relevant sites and keeping your Google Business Profile strong enough to show in the map pack. Then measuring it in enquiries, not just rankings.

Search engine optimisation is several connected jobs, not one task. Here is what the work covers:

  • Keyword research. Mapping how Aucklanders actually search for your service, including suburb names and "near me" phrasing, to the page that should rank for each search. Revenue terms come first, volume second.
  • Technical SEO. Crawling, indexing, site speed and Core Web Vitals, redirects and mobile usability: the things that stop Google reaching or trusting your pages. Where a fix needs code, I brief your developer with exactly what to change and why. The full scope, including access for AI crawlers, is on my technical SEO page.
  • On-page SEO and content. Titles, headings and service pages written to answer the question a buyer is asking, directly and early, which is also the format AI answers lift.
  • Schema markup. Structured data in the Schema.org vocabulary that tells Google and AI assistants who you are, what you do and which parts of Auckland you serve.
  • Link building. Earning backlinks and mentions from New Zealand sites your customers already read, chosen for relevance rather than volume.
  • Google Business Profile and local citations. Categories, services, photos, posts and review requests, plus consistent business details across New Zealand directories, so the map pack has every reason to show you. The full scope is on my local SEO page.
  • Reporting. Google Search Console and Google Analytics data turned into one monthly view of rankings, traffic, enquiries and AI visibility.

How Auckland search results work, and why the map pack comes first

For most searches that pair a service with Auckland, Google shows a map pack of local businesses before any website. In the nine Auckland SEO searches I checked in September 2026, every one had a map pack and none had an AI Overview. Local searches work differently from advice searches: your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your distance from the searcher shape the map, and your website decides the organic results beneath it.

Local searches are still mostly a map-pack game: in my study of 1,000 Google New Zealand searches, 91% of local-provider searches showed a local pack and only 16.5% showed an AI Overview.

That is a balanced research sample rather than every search in the country, but the pattern is clear. The same study found AI Overviews on 96.0% of cost and pricing searches. The questions people ask before they pick a provider are increasingly answered by AI, while the moment they choose one is still decided by the map and the links under it.

So an Auckland SEO plan has three jobs: win the map pack with a complete, active Google Business Profile, win the organic results with pages that match how people search, and make your site the source AI answers quote for the advice questions around your service.

Auckland is also a spread-out city. A business in one suburb that serves the North Shore, West Auckland or South Auckland needs location signals on its website as well as its profile. Distance from the searcher matters in the map pack, so nobody can honestly promise the top spot across the region from one address, but pages that genuinely describe your work in each area give Google a reason to consider you there.

One strategy, two engines

SEO that also builds your AI search visibility

Much of the work that ranks you in Google now also shapes whether AI assistants mention you. Clear answers, clean entity data, schema markup and links from sources AI models trust feed ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews as well as the rankings. I plan every SEO task so it counts in both places, so you pay for one strategy, not two.

Content

Written to rank in Google and structured so AI models can extract and cite it: direct answers, clear entities, demonstrated expertise.

Schema & Structure

Structured data that gives Google and AI models an unambiguous picture of your business, your services and the parts of Auckland you cover.

Authority

Links and citations selected for the sources AI models actually trust, so authority built for Google also builds AI recommendation confidence.

If AI visibility is the bigger goal for your business, my AI search optimisation service goes further on entities, citations and tracking.

Working with an SEO consultant in Auckland

When you hire me, the SEO specialist who plans your strategy is the one who does the work. I've worked in search since 2006, on corporate, local and international campaigns, and for ten consecutive years I was a top affiliate for Buffalo Partners in UK gaming, one of the most competitive areas of search. You get that experience on every task, direct access to me by email and call, and one person accountable for the result.

Day to day, the work runs on a monthly plan ranked by impact. Every change I make or recommend comes with the reasoning behind it, and each month you get a plain-English report on what moved and what comes next. My client base is long-term retainers, some running for years, with no lock-in contracts, so the work has to keep earning its place.

I'm based in Auckland and work with clients across New Zealand, the UK, Canada and the US. I meet Auckland clients in person when it helps, but day-to-day work happens on Google Meet. There is more on my background in search if you want the detail.

Amazed. Quite something to have created that much internet chatter. Progress to date is great.

How to choose an SEO company in Auckland

Choose the SEO company that can show you relevant past work, explains exactly what it will change and why, measures success in enquiries and revenue, and never guarantees a number one ranking. Google's own advice on hiring an SEO says much the same: interview them, check references, give read-only Search Console access for an audit, and be wary of anyone who promises the top spot.

Seven questions worth asking any SEO company, including me:

  • Who will actually do the work on my account, and how senior are they? The person who sells SEO is not always the person who does it.
  • Can you show relevant examples and put me in touch with a past client? References show what working together is actually like.
  • What will you change on my site, and will you explain why? You are responsible for what happens on your website, so you should understand each change before it is made.
  • How will you measure success? Enquiries and revenue first, with rankings as a leading indicator.
  • Who owns the accounts and the content? You should own your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics and every page written for you.
  • What are the contract terms? Mine are simple: no lock-in contracts.
  • How are you handling AI Overviews and AI assistants? A plan that ignores AI answers is already behind.

Lists of the "best SEO companies in Auckland" are fine for building a shortlist, but read them with care: some are published by a company that appears on the list. Use them to find names, then put each company through the same questions. I'm happy to answer every one.

How it works

How an SEO engagement works: audit, plan, monthly work

Every engagement starts with an SEO audit: your rankings, the map pack, technical health in Google Search Console, content gaps and what competitors are doing that you aren't. From that I write a plan ranked by impact, then work through it month by month and report on what moved. Technical and content fixes can start to show within weeks. In my experience, authority building typically takes three to six months of consistent work.

1

SEO audit

It starts with the free AI Visibility Audit: your current Google positions for revenue keywords and whether AI assistants mention you. Once we work together it goes deeper into crawl health, content gaps and the competitors who outrank you.

2

Plan ranked by impact

Fixes and pages ordered by how much revenue they are likely to move, so the first month goes on what matters most.

3

Implementation

Keyword research, technical fixes, content, schema markup, link building and Google Business Profile work, with a clear developer brief wherever code needs to change.

4

Monthly reporting

Rankings, organic traffic, enquiries and AI mentions, with the reasoning behind next month's priorities.

Common questions

SEO in Auckland: common questions

How much does SEO cost in Auckland?

Most Auckland businesses pay $500 to $1,500 a month excluding GST for local SEO on one location, and $1,500 to $3,500 a month for competitive or multi-location campaigns, in line with published New Zealand ranges. My local SEO starts at $1,200 a month and my SEO retainers at $2,500, with no lock-in contracts. The full breakdown is on how much SEO costs in NZ.

What is the 80/20 rule for SEO?

It is the Pareto principle applied to search: a small share of your pages, keywords and fixes usually produces most of the results. For a local business that might be two or three service pages and the Google Business Profile. A good audit finds that 20% first, which is why my plans are ranked by impact rather than worked through as a checklist.

Is it worth hiring an SEO company?

It depends on what your searches are worth. Google itself says a small local business can probably do much of the basic work on its own. Hiring pays when the searches are valuable, the competition is strong or your time is better spent running the business. The free audit shows where you stand, so you can decide with numbers rather than a sales pitch.

Is SEO still worth it now that AI answers exist?

Yes, especially for local services. In my NZ AI Overviews study, only 16.5% of local-provider searches showed an AI Overview, while a local pack appeared on 91% of them. Google also says the same foundational SEO practices apply to its AI features, so SEO done well now earns visibility in both places. I cover the wider question in whether AI will replace SEO.

Can you help businesses outside Auckland?

Yes. I'm based in Auckland and work with clients across New Zealand, the UK, Canada and the US, delivered remotely with regular calls. This page is for businesses that want to win Auckland searches. If your customers are spread around the country, read about SEO for businesses across New Zealand.
